This is the AP class schedule that would result if classes were kept in the same blocks as they are this year, but extended to be double-blocked.

Based on this information, it is possible to attempt to construct a “best-case,” or optimistic double-blocked AP schedule.
Many variations of this schedule are possible. We have constructed this as a potential “best case” schedule, designed to minimize conflicts based on typical classes taken for each grade. However, it is mathematically impossible to fully avoid every possible class collision.
Take for example the seven classes typically taken by seniors. By the pigeonhole principle, which effectively states, “if you put some number of items in some number of boxes, and there are more items then boxes that at least one box will have multiple items in it,” there is indeed no way to construct a schedule that will minimally prevent students from taking their intended classes with only four slots available to seven or more classes.

As you can see, many potential student schedules would still have conflicts. Students could not take both AP Chemistry and AP Statistics, both AP Physics and AP Studio Art, or AP Calculus, AP Econ/Gov, and AP Studio Art. A schedule which minimizes these common conflicts is not possible.
We have prepared a number of schedules based on actual schedules of current and past students in order to demonstrate the effects of this change.
You will notice that many students have to drop two or more of their classes or give up study halls or open campus periods to accommodate these changes. Clearly, the change makes it difficult and often unappealing to take any more than one or two AP classes per year.

Displaced classes: Graphic Design, Yearbook
A lot of people think art doesn’t require homework or outside of class work but it very much so does. Especially the fact that art requires effort and time even if you’re “good” at it. Math and other core classes can go quicker but they also have heavy amounts of homework. Combine this with trying to work a job on school days and being the eldest trying to help out your mom and do extra curricular activities is a bit rough.

We have not included an optimistic double-blocked schedule for Luke since he took more than four AP classes and would not have been able to take all of these AP classes with the double-blocked classes.
I believe that although double blocking may be useful for some students, it would EXTREMELY limit most students, with less total benefit in all.

As a student who is highly devoted to her grades and clubs, it’s already difficult to take all the courses necessary to graduate while pleasing college admissions at the same time. I would hate to have to drop my music and yearbook classes, considering how I have leadership roles in both.
Schedule crowding would, of course, affect teachers just as it would students.
